The field of the microbiota-gut-brain axis is gaining growing interest in relation to several brain disorders, including (alcohol use disorder (AUD). Despite this disorder being traditionally considered a pure brain illness, a number of studies support the involvement of the gut microbiota in its onset/development. However, the direction and potential causality of the link microbiota-brain are not well understood to date. The aim of our project is to evaluate the microbiota as a potential biomarker of alcohol addiction, which will open up the possibility, in the long term, of establishing an innovative and easily modifiable target in the management of alcohol dependence.
This project is developed with the collaboration of several teams, including several clinical departments involved in the recruitment of patients.
